6 ways to get away from smartphone addiction

Kids find it hard to tear themselves away from mobile / tablet screens these days. After school hours are mainly spent browsing on the smartphones. The unending Facebook scroll page, the nonstop Whatsapp updates provide for hours of meaningless browsing. Here are 6 ways in which you can ditch the screens for a better utilization of time.

  1. Take up a mini project – It could be anything from a simple science project to a craft project that draws you passionately. As you spend time on this project for a few weeks your time is well spent and you pick up new skills along the way.
  2. Read the newspaper – Make it a point to read editorials, special articles that appear in supplements that go beyond the regular news. It could be a book review, art column, a sports analysis or even a satirical piece.
  3. Pen an article for a magazine – Pick up a recent news item and pen a letter to the editor. Write a full page article on a topic of your choice and send it across for publication.
  4. Take up a hobby class – Enroll yourself into a dance class, a swimming class, a karate class or anything else you find attracted to. Keeps you busy with a purpose.
  5. Start a club – Start a nature club or a quiz club to draw in like minded kids and use team work to cook up some useful stuff for everybody depending on the theme of your club.
  6. Take a walk – Just take a walk down unexplored trails around your house and discover new stuff, observe birds, make notes. You get entertained while your body gets some exercise and soaks in some fresh air.
