Should Students join Tuition?

Tuition, world over are special classes attended by students world over to get deeper clarity or some additional practice and support on subjects that they are struggling with. In India, tuition are more of parallel schools that engage students during the ‘after-school-hours’ so that the parents are saved the trouble of managing them.

Tuition in India are almost always supervised learning centers where the kid is under the watchful eyes of the tuition teacher who asks the kid to finish off their homework and repeat whatever has been taught in class that day.

I find it difficult to digest the fact that as parents and teachers, we do not encourage the habit formation among kids of sitting down themselves for their studies. We do not develop in them a sense of responsibility towards completing their homework. We as parents are not ready to shoulder our share of responsibility in helping students develop the habit of self study.

The excuses by parents are endless. We come late from work. Kids do not listen to us. It is difficult to get him/her to focus. It is unfair to expect us to give up our 2 hours of relaxation after a long day at office. Kids if left at home get distracted by our mobile phones. yada yada… I can only pity the parents who seek refuge in these excuses to justify sending their kids off to tuition.

The poor kid goes to tuition and is lorded and goaded by the tuition teacher whose only interest is in pushing the kids’ marks upward. The tuition teacher is measured by parents solely on basis of the kid’s score in the tests. As this goes on for years, the kid develops an unhealthy dependence on the need for somebody to watch and goad him all along. He or she lack the confidence to engage in focused self study.

As the kid comes to higher classes, the curriculum becomes vast. The over dependence on tuition and inability to study independently cripples the child and dents his/her self confidence. Scores start dipping. Self confidence dips and a sense of inferiority develops. In most cases, it is too late to take corrective action.

Hence tuition are a big no-no if you ask me.
