A lot of parents come especially in higher classes come with a concern that their kids do not read the textbooks but instead rely solely on the notes given by teachers. While the concern is genuine, the solution is not an overnight one. Cultivating the habit of reading does not come easy. It requires some investment on the part of parents in terms of time and effort. Here are some ideas you could try for the appropriate age groups
Class 1-5: Sit with the textbook and read aloud to the child. Pause after a few lines and evaluate your kids’ comprehension. Explain if needed. If the kid has understood, pose a simple question. This method works well with kids in classes 1 to 5
Class 6 to 8: Challenge the kid(s) to read thoroughly a few paragraphs or a page in the textbook and get ready to answer a few random questions framed from the earmarked portion. This goes well with kids in classes 6 to 8.
Class 9 to 12: Challenge the kid(s) to read a paragraph and prepare a point wise recall flash card. In case of science, you can ask the kid to prepare a mind map of the concepts covered. This works well with kids in classes 9 to 12.
