Newspapers are a simple source of day to day happenings around us reported in an easy to read format by good newspapers. The affordability of newspapers in India makes it one more viable option to keep track of events around us.
In today’s age of mobiles and tablets, a newspaper might seem redundant. However, for kids it is still a wonderful source of information. It does not come with screen glare or wi-fi radiation.
Some of the media houses in India like the the Times of India and The Hindu have released student newspapers that are crisp in their reporting style and eliminate non essential news that may be stale for students. Dedicated editorial teams also reword the news pieces so as to tone down the language and make the news easy to grasp.
How do you get your child to read newspapers?
- Get them a newspaper everyday.
- Read out interesting stories and happenings from the newspaper and pass the paper to them for a second reading.
- Share stories from the paper across the dinner table and draw the child’s attention to specific portions of the paper.
- Encourage the child to drop a letter to the editor on events or news items where the kids share an opinion. The joy of seeing their opinions published in the next day’s paper is immense.
- Maintain a simple scrapbook and ask your child to paste one piece of news into the scrapbook everyday.
- Locate the place in the news item on the globe or atlas. This also develops an interest in geography among kids.
