Your children may be slow at learning. They may be having a hard time grasping concepts in class. They may be having issues trying to focus. However, no child is stupid. Here are 4 Steps Parents can use to encourage Slow Learners and Help them Bloom.

Step 1 in Encouraging Slow Learners – Get the fundamentals right

  1. Two things that are most critical in the development of a child are breakfast and sleep. Ensure your child is getting a nutritious and balanced breakfast. Make sure that your child is getting 7-9 hours of sleep every day. This number may vary across kids. However you should be able to tell the optimal sleep your child needs to wake up fresh and rejuvenated.
  2. Study time should be free of distractions. Switch of TV and music systems. Put off the tablet and smartphones. Choose a noise free and comfortable place for the child to sit. The lighting should be bright enough to study.

Step 2 in Encouraging Slow Learners – Be aware of child behaviour and psychology

  1. Every child has her/his own set of abilities and talents.
  2. The time required to learn new things varies from one child to the other.
  3. Remember that a child need additional repetitions to learn new things.
  4. One cannot rush through the learning process of child. It has to happen at its own pace.
  5. Be patient. Your anger, your impatience and punishment will only spoil the child.
  6. Ensure that you and your child are attuned to positive thinking.
  7. Let there be room for some humour during learning time.

Step 3 in Encouraging Slow Learners – Parent Participation

  1. An adult, especially a parent, must be present with the child during their study time.
  2. Fill your child with courage and confidence.
  3. Be in constant touch with the child’s teacher(s)
  4. Both parents need to join hands when it comes to the learning of the child.
  5. Summarize the answers if needed.
  6. Help the child if needed to get their homework done.
  7. Use lot of audio-visual medium , teaching aids, toys to help children learn.
  8. Identify shortcuts and teaching techniques that work best with your children.
  9. Give lot of examples from the surroundings.

Step 4 in Encouraging Slow Learners – Set Ground Rules

  1. A child should present the stuff that has been learnt before retiring to bed.
  2. Do not encourage rote learning – explain the logic and rationale wherever possible.
  3. Encourage children to reiterate their learning via narration in their own words.

Keep evaluating the child’s learning on a day to day basis. Slow learners usually bloom well when they have the company of another learner. Small progress leads to big achievements.
